Inspired by Alice’s Chair

The Stein’s Collect exhibit at the SF MOMA is gone, but not its influence.

I saw the show this summer while taking Glenn Hirsch’s painting workshop at UC Berkeley extension.  I was excited to see so many of the paintings that I have seen in books over the years.  Looking at the SFMOMA website to learn more about the collection, I saw these charming chairs, with seat covers done in petit point by Alice B. Toklas (see photo below from the SFMOMA website).

All summer, I experimented with ways to add collage elements in my paintings.  One of my most successful pieces from the class is The Yellow Chair, inspired by Alice’s chairs.

I combined paper, cheese cloth, and fabric in both the background and on the chair to add texture and pattern to the painting.
